CASE STUDY
ISO 20022 payment integration for enterprise payroll workflows
Challenge
An international financial institution needed a more reliable way to generate and transmit payroll payment instructions to multiple banks across different markets. Existing export processes were not aligned with ISO 20022 requirements, which increased the risk of formatting issues, manual checks, delayed settlements, and avoidable reconciliation effort. The client needed a controlled integration that could standardise payment data, support bank-ready XML generation, and improve confidence in payment execution.
Solution
MPED designed and implemented an ISO 20022 payment integration layer that connected the client's payroll and finance processes with downstream banking workflows. The solution generated compliant XML payment files, integrated with banking systems including Societe Generale and mBank, and introduced validation, export control, and status reporting so payment instructions could be prepared and transmitted with greater consistency and less operational friction.
System functionality
- Generation of payment files in ISO 20022 XML format
- Integration with electronic banking systems (Societe Generale, mBank)
- Automatic data retrieval from the payroll system
- Data validation before export
- Support for domestic and international transfers
- Reporting of payment execution statuses
Technologies
- .NET Framework, C#
- SQL Server
- Microsoft Azure (hosting and integration)
- API integrations with banks and ISO 20022 XML file generation
Results
- Standardised generation of ISO 20022 payment files for payroll settlements
- Reduced manual formatting and validation effort before bank submission
- Lower risk of rejected or non-compliant payment instructions
- Improved reliability across domestic and international payment workflows
- Better reporting, status visibility, and transparency across finance operations
Summary
The ISO 20022 payment integration delivered by MPED gave the client a more dependable way to move payroll payment data from internal finance systems into bank-ready workflows. By combining compliant XML generation, bank integration, and validation controls, the solution reduced manual handling, improved settlement reliability, and strengthened operational confidence across high-value payment processes.
